Studies

The Department of Geography focuses its teaching and research on understanding the spatial organization of nature and human society. Geographers are valued for their analytical skills and global perspective, which enable them to work in a wide range of professions after completing their university studies. We offer students the opportunity to study at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels, and additional knowledge can also be gained through continuing education.

We welcome international students to our Master’s Programme: Geoinformatics for Urbanised Society (120 ECTS). This is a two-year MSc programme taught entirely in English. The programme aims to prepare students to become highly qualified specialists capable of analysing spatial data and developing decision support systems for public, private, and non-governmental sectors, while also understanding various socio-spatial and natural processes.

In addition, we offer two joint Master’s programmes:

• Geo-information Science and Earth Observation for Environmental Modelling and Management (GEM) is an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Degree Programme. It consists of four distinct tracks taught by four leading European universities: the University of Tartu (Estonia), the University of Twente (Netherlands), Lund University (Sweden), and UCLouvain (Belgium).
• Environmental Governance and Adaptation to Climate Change (EGACC) is a joint Master’s programme offered by the Estonian University of Life Sciences and the University of Tartu. This two-year programme provides an in-depth exploration of the essential science, policy, and practical skills needed to manage, protect, and restore the environment while addressing climate change on both local and global scales.

For Erasmus students, we offer several courses in English during both the autumn and spring semesters.
