Professor Volli Kalm, Rector of the University of Tartu (10 February 1953 – 23 December 2017)

Friday, December 1 2017 marks the 98th birthday of the Estonia’s national university in Tartu. To celebrate the event, several events take place during the week-long celebrations – honorary doctorates and doctorates are conferred, the University’s honorary member named and the laurate of The University of Tartu Award for Contribution to Estonian National Identity named.

Meelis Luht, former management board member of Eesti Meedia Group, will start work as the Director of Administration of the University of Tartu on 21 August. Rector Volli Kalm said the new director of administration has been in charge of several different areas of activity in his career and is a top leader with international work experience. We can see his capability as well as his desire and ambition to actively contribute to the implementation of the university’s development goals.

The EuroDendro 2017 conference will be held in Tartu, Estonia on 6–10 September 2017. The international conference will bring together more than a hundred tree-ring researchers from twenty-five European countries as well as Asian, and North and South American scholars.

The University of Tartu has the largest number of graduates in Estonia—an estimated of 70 000 graduates. Aiming to bring the alumni community closer together, link them more to the university, develop mutual communication and professional cooperation, the University of Tartu launched a network for its alumni (www.utalumni.ee), novel in Estonia as well as Europe, the like of which is also used by the University of Oxford.

Nature published five of the best images from the competition, which ran throughout March and attracted about 170 entries, from New Zealand to Norway, Canada to Qatar. Winners were chosen by a panel of Nature designers and journalists, who judged the images purely on their aesthetic impact. We did not ask for additional context, and we accepted only one image per person. Submissions could be made either through social media or by e-mail.

The new director of the Centre for Migration and Urban Studies at the UT is Professor of the University at Buffalo, State University of New York and Research Fellow of the University of Tartu Dr Daniel B. Hess. The Centre explores contemporary challenges facing urban regions including migration, residential mobility, housing and neighbourhood change, as well as the integration of immigrants and ethnic minorities across multiple life domains (such as places of residence and work, as well as intermarriages).

Imagine redesigning a city in only 2 days. That’s exactly what American and Estonian students did last week, when they participated in an exciting 48-hour urban planning challenge as part of a laboratory practicum led by Dr. Daniel B. Hess, Visiting Scholar in the Centre for Urban and Migration Studies at the University of Tartu and Marie Skłodowska- Curie Fellow. UT students in the Department of Geography were joined by visiting American students to develop new schemes for redeveloping Tartu city center.

With the aim to develop Tartu’s university campus into an open, higher quality environment which supports innovation, the University of Tartu Department of Geography’s Mobility Lab uses smart phones and interviews to study how students, employees of the university and other creative establishments use the urban space in relation to the location of academic buildings or the workplace.

The first Estonian national atlas will be compiled by the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia at the initiative of the University of Tartu Department of Geography. On the one hand, the unique atlas, first of its kind, is a representative work of the country and, on the other hand, it is a reference book where Estonia’s 100 years of development is presented on old and new maps.

The Mobility Lab of the University of Tartu Department of Geography participates in the European Union major project SmartEnCity to develop the Tartu city centre area with a Soviet-era planning into a smart city. The project is a “lighthouse project” in the European Union research and innovation framework Horizon 2020 which has inspired other similar initiatives.

The quick development of information technology has brought the development of several geographic regions and created knowledge–based peripheries and centres. On 9 November at 14:15 in the University of Tartu’s assembly hall, Professor Mark Graham of the University of Oxford will talk about uneven geographies of power and participation in the internet era and ask why the digital divide has not been reduced more.

UT Professor of Physical Geography and Landscape Ecology Ülo Mander was elected member of the pan-European academy Academia Europaea in the field of Earth and cosmic sciences. The membership of the academician recognises the professor’s international research work and continuing contribution to European science.

Joint French-Estonian project conference “Enhanced constructed wetlands and catchment modelling” will be held on the 5th and 6th October 2015, at Chemicum, room 1019. The Conference is a part of Parrot Project activities. The Parrot projects’ grant holders are PhD Florent Chazarenc, prof Ülo Mander, PhD Henine Hocine & PhD Jaan Pärn. Conference Programme

The widening gap between the rich and poor is leading to segregation in more and more European cities and it decreases the social stability and competitive power of the cities. These conclusions are based on the first rigorous comparative study on segregation in European cities which was published in the book “Socio-economic segregation in European capital cities. East meets West”, under the direction of Tiit Tammaru, Professor of Urban and Population Geography at the University of Tartu.

The University of Tartu hosted a delegation from the Institute of Smart City of Shanghai University who consider Estonian research in urbanisation and urban development a role model. Together, Chinese and Estonian researchers develop urban planning solutions, social innovation models and sensing systems.
